4. Guri Dam
The Guri Dam is located in Bolvar state, Venezuela, and is also known as the Simón Bolvar Dam. The project began in 1963, with a capacity of 1750 megawatts at the outset. The dam was upgraded in 1978 to provide for a 2065 megawatt capacity.
The dam can now generate up to 10,300 megawatts of electricity. The Guri reservoir is Venezuela’s largest body of fresh water, and the plant generates up to 73 per cent of the country’s electricity.
