8. Longtan Dam

China appears to have a monopoly on megadams. Longtan Dam, in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, has a capacity of 6,426 megawatts, making it one of the world’s top ten most powerful dams.

The dam is designed to provide hydroelectric power, flood control, and navigation. Seven surface spillways, two bottom outlets, and an underground power station are also part of the dam. The Longtan ship lift, which will be part of the dam complex, will be the world’s tallest ship lift system.
