ILI Inc. Launches “Mierusa”: Pioneering AI App to Support the Visually Impaired

ILI Inc., a forward-thinking company based in Shibuya, Tokyo, has unveiled “Mierusa,” an innovative AI-powered application designed to empower individuals with visual impairments. The name “Mierusa” comes from the Japanese phrase mieru sa, meaning “I can see” or “It’s visible,” reflecting the app’s mission to enhance accessibility and independence.
“Mierusa” uses advanced AI technology to analyze visual data captured by a user’s device and translate it into detailed verbal descriptions. This functionality allows visually impaired individuals to navigate their surroundings, solve daily challenges, and confidently engage with the world. Founded in 2007 by DK Sugiyama, ILI Inc. has consistently focused on creating socially impactful services that foster equality and inclusivity. The launch of “Mierusa” marks a significant step toward achieving this mission.

A Vision for Inclusion

Under the leadership of Sugiyama, ILI Inc. has embraced the corporate philosophy, “Do Today for a Better Tomorrow,” positioning itself as a key player in developing technology-driven solutions for modern societal challenges. With “Mierusa,” the company leverages artificial intelligence to address everyday difficulties visually impaired individuals face.

The app’s functionality is simple yet transformative: users tap their device screen, prompting the app to analyze their surroundings using AI-powered image recognition. The app then translates the visual data into detailed verbal descriptions, helping users navigate their environments, solve daily challenges, and share experiences with greater clarity.

Empowering Lives Through Innovation

“Mierusa” was developed by Jotaro Sugiyama, a second-year student at Keio University’s Faculty of Environment and Information Studies and a member of ILI’s AI/DX Division. As the first son of DK Sugiyama, Jotaro’s work highlights ILI’s commitment to nurturing young talent and delivering innovative solutions to pressing social challenges.

Born in Tokyo in 2003, Jotaro’s passion for programming began during his elementary school years in the Crefus robot class, where he explored designing entertainment experiences. He continued honing his skills through Life is Tech and, in 2020, became the youngest Japanese winner in Apple’s “Swift Student Challenge” programming contest.

In 2023, DK Sugiyama and Jotaro visited the Apple Campus at One Infinite Loop in Silicon Valley. During their visit, they explored the dynamic world of venture companies, gaining insights and inspiration that further deepened their shared vision for driving technological innovation and creating impactful solutions.

“Our goal with ‘Mierusa’ is to empower visually impaired individuals to lead more independent and fulfilling lives,” said Jotaro Sugiyama, a member of ILI’s AI/DX Division and CEO of Infinity Inc. “By harnessing the power of AI, we are actively working toward building a society where everyone has an equal opportunity to thrive.”

Corporate Leadership in Social Innovation

DK Sugiyama, the driving force behind ILI Inc., is no stranger to transformative leadership. Born in Tokyo in 1979 and raised in New York, Sugiyama has built an impressive career centered on bridging cultural and technological divides. After founding ILI Inc. in 2007, he quickly established the company as a global leader in facilitating effective communication and solving modern business and societal challenges.

Sugiyama’s dedication to addressing social inequities has been a hallmark of his leadership. Through projects like “Mierusa,” he demonstrates a commitment to blending business innovation with community impact. “Technology must serve a greater purpose,” Sugiyama asserts. “At ILI, we aim to harness the power of AI to ensure that everyone—regardless of their abilities—can lead a meaningful and connected life.”

Future Prospects

“Mierusa” is currently available for iOS devices via the App Store (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/id6496858309), with an Android version in development. Its release aligns with ILI Inc.’s ongoing efforts to develop cutting-edge tools that promote inclusivity.

In addition to spearheading “Mierusa,” Sugiyama has led numerous other initiatives through ILI Inc., including serving as president of Quantum Leaps Corporation, a company established by the late Sony chairman Nobuyuki Idei. His editorial work on the long-running series My Philosophy underscores his ability to bring thought leaders together to inspire collective action.

Founded in 2007, ILI Inc. operates with a mission to solve global communication challenges and develop innovative, socially impactful technologies. With a capital base of ¥50 million, the company continues to provide optimal resources and solutions to meet diverse needs across cultures and industries.

As Sugiyama and his team at ILI Inc. push forward with their vision, “Mierusa” stands as a testament to their belief in technology as a tool for building a better tomorrow.
