Top 10 Largest Power Stations In The World 2024

Industrial installations that generate electric power are known as power stations or power plants.
The top ten most powerful power plants in the world are listed below.

Non-renewable power plants use coal, fuel oils, nuclear, natural gas, oil shale, and peat, whereas renewable power plants use biomass, geothermal heat, hydro, solar energy, solar heat, tides, and wind as a source of energy. For power plants that use numerous fuel sources, only the most important fuel source is indicated.

List Of The Top 10 Largest Power Stations In The World 2024

10. Sayano-Shushenskaya: Russia

The Sayano–Shushenskaya Dam, on the Yenisei River in Sayanogorsk in Khakassia, Russia, is Russia’s largest power plant and the world’s ninth-largest hydroelectric plant.

The power station is made up of ten Francis generating units, each with a 640MW capacity.

9. Longtan: China

On the Hongshui River in China, the Longtan Dam is a huge roller-compacted concrete gravity dam.

The dam is the world’s tallest of its kind, at 216.2 meters tall and 849 meters long. The dam was built to provide hydroelectric power while also assisting with flood control and navigation.

8. Xiangjiaba: China

The Xiangjiaba Dam, located on the Jinsha River in southwest China, is a massive gravity dam.

Following the Three Gorges Dam and the Xiluodu Dam, the dam is China’s third-largest hydropower station.

7. Grand Coulee: USA

The 6,809 MW project includes three power plants and a concrete gravity dam with a height of 168 meters and a length of 1,592 meters.

The Grand Coulee is a gravity dam that produces hydroelectric power and provides irrigation water on the Columbia River in Washington, USA.

6. Kashiwazaki-Kariwa: Japan

The nuclear power plant was 19 kilometers from the epicenter of the second most powerful earthquake ever to hit a nuclear power plant. The plant was forced to close for 21 months as a result.

On a 4.2-square-kilometer site, the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant is a large, modern nuclear power facility. In terms of net electrical power rating, it is the world’s largest nuclear generating power station.

5. Tucuru: Brazil

The Tucuru Dam is a concrete gravity dam in Tucuru County, in the Brazilian state of Pará. Hydroelectric power generation and navigation are two of the dam’s main functions.

Belém town and the surrounding area receive electricity from a power plant with an installed capacity of 8,370 megawatts.

4. Guri: Venezuela

In Bolvar State, Venezuela, the Guri Dam is a concrete gravity and embankment dam. It has a length of 7,426 meters and a height of 162 meters.

The power plant is made up of 20 generating units of different capacities ranging between 130 MW and 770 MW.

3. Xiluodu: China

The Xiluodu is a double-curvature arch dam with a height of 285.5 meters and a length of 700 meters. It is also the world’s third-tallest arch dam.

In addition to Three Gorges, the Three Gorges Project Corporation built the Xiluodu power station.

2. Itaipu Dam: Brazil & Paraguay

The dam, which is located on the border between Brazil and Paraguay, achieved a new record for electricity production , producing 103,09 MWh, surpassing the Three Gorges Dam facility.

With a capacity of 14,000 MW, the Itaipu hydroelectric power project is the world’s second largest hydropower plant.

1. Three Gorges Dam: China

The plant’s yearly power output is anticipated to be 85 TWh. Nine provinces and two cities, including Shanghai, are served by the hydropower station.

In terms of installed capacity, China’s Three Gorges Dam is the world’s largest power station (22,500 MW). The dam generated a total of 98.8 terawatt-hours (TWh), which was a world record at the time.
