Choosing a Proper Sunscreen for Babies – What to Know

As a parent, it’s natural to want to protect your little ones from anything that might harm them, and sunburn is one of the most common threats. So, when it comes to choosing a proper sunscreen for babies, you need to be in possession of all the facts.

It starts with understanding that a baby’s skin is far more sensitive than ours, so it’s about ensuring that you’re giving them the best possible protection without subjecting them to harsh chemicals. So stick with us as we help you make a more informed decision.

Choosing a Proper Sunscreen for Babies Takes Special Care

Not all sunblock is suitable for the delicate skin of younger children. In fact, under the age of 6 months, they shouldn’t be in the sun at all. This means that choosing a proper sunscreen for babies takes special care and attention in order to find the right one.

One thing you do have to take into consideration, though, is that any sunscreen you buy needs to offer broad-spectrum protection. If a product you’re thinking of buying doesn’t offer this, then you need to move on to one that does. Otherwise, your little one will only get half the protection they need.

UVA rays and UVB rays can damage your skin in different ways, so protection needs to be provided for both.

Getting the Right SPF Matters

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, which blocks 97% of the sun’s UVB rays. Higher SPF numbers do offer more protection, but no sunscreen can block 100% of the rays. It’s also important to know that you should reapply sunscreen every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating.

You may or may not know that sunscreens come in mineral and chemical forms, so which is best for your precious children? Well, it’s the former, rather than the latter, due to the fact that they’re made from natural ingredients like zinc oxide. They don’t need to be absorbed either, which means they’re typically less irritating than delicate or sensitive skin.

Other things to think about with kids’ sunscreen include:

  • Water Resistance – If you’re planning to spend time swimming or if your baby sweats, look for a water-resistant sunscreen. No sunscreen is entirely waterproof, so reapplication is really important after swimming or excessive sweating.
  • Stay Away From Sprays and Powders – Spray or powder sun protection can be inhaled by babies, which can be harmful. Stick to lotions or creams that can be safely applied to their skin without this risk being a problem.
  • Test Before Using Fully – There might be some occasions when even mineral sunscreen can be a problem for someone’s skin. That’s why you should always do a quick patch test to double check there are no adverse effects. Test a little on a small area and wait 24 hours. If nothing happens, you’re good to go.

Choosing a Proper Sunscreen for Babies is Easy When You Know How

Choosing the right sunscreen for your baby involves selecting a broad-spectrum, mineral-based product with an SPF of at least 30, designed for sensitive skin, and free from potentially irritating chemicals. They’re the basics that you should use as a guide.

Also, always prioritize physical barriers like clothing and shade, and consult with a healthcare provider for the best advice tailored to your baby’s specific needs. With the right precautions, you can enjoy the sunny days with peace of mind, knowing your baby is well-protected.
