Peri-Workout Nutrition & Supplements for Maximal Muscle Growth 💪

Building muscle is simple, but not easy. Nutrient timing as well as strategic use of supplements are both underrated tools for maximizing this process. 

Beginning 60-90 minutes before training, consuming a lean protein to minimize catabolism during training as well as carbohydrates to support energy levels would be ideal. Although this food isn’t going to be fully processed through your system to fuel the workout, simply not being hungry has been shown to help maximize training performance. 

Pre workout, consuming caffeine (so long as it doesn’t affect sleep), will improve focus and mental clarity to allow you to optimally perform technically and could even give you the extra push towards hitting your rep targets. Beyond 300mg you may experience some vasoconstriction so be weary of going overboard  on stimulants. 

Hydration will be the most important aspect of your peri workout nutrition so using osmolytic agents to supply your muscles with water and nutrients can be helpful. Ensuring adequate electrolytes & fluid with these is absolutely necessary. 

Intra workout is a great time to initiate the recovery process with more fast digesting carbohydrates to replenish any lost glycogen and finish the workout strong. With that pair some protein to keep catabolism at an absolute minimum.

Post workout, it’s important to not slow digestion with large amounts of fats. Use lean protein sources and prioritize low fibre carbohydrates. Now go make some gains!

To gain the kind of muscle pictured, you need to commit to extended massing phases, even the ones where you might not feel or look lean. We may not want to but it is a necessary step for building real, quality size. 

Here’s why this process works and how to do it effectively:

Muscle growth is energy-intensive. A consistent hypercaloric envrionment gives your body the fuel it needs to repair and grow muscle tissue. Protein provides the building blocks for growth, carbs fuel your performance and recovery, and fats support hormonal health. Without enough energy, your body simply can’t optimize muscle growth.

When you’re in a surplus, your body has more resources to recover from intense training. This means better repair of microtears in muscle fibers, less fatigue, and the ability to train consistently at a high level over weeks and months. This is crucial for making long-term the type of progress you see here.

To make it work, start with a slight surplus (250–500 calories above maintenance) and monitor progress. Adjust as needed—if you’re gaining too much fat, scale back slightly. If you’re not gaining at all, add more calories. 

The bottom line: Real muscle growth requires a commitment to these extended phases. By fueling your body, recovering properly, and staying consistent, you’ll set yourself up for the kind of long-term progress you see here.

I took my gains to the next level when I realized recovery was just as important as hard training. There are ZERO hacks to speeding up recovery as much as people want you to believe.

HOWEVER, any methods you can use to decompress, lower stress, and get into a restful state (with adequate food), will be the best possible route to preparing for your next session and maximizing gains.

Sports massage, sauna, stretching, are all ways that may allow you to get into that restful state, but they certainly aren’t magic. The number one recovery method is… TIME. 

The answer is almost never do more, and almost always do less. Find the methods you enjoy, be mindful of training progression, and eat to fuel your training, don’t train to fuel your eating.
