Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown:
Whatever you do, don’t refer to multi-instrumentalist Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown as a bluesman, although his imprimatur on the development of Texas blues is enormous. You’re liable to get him riled. If you must pigeonhole the legend, just call him an eclectic Texas musical master whose interests encompass virtually every roots genre imaginable.
Brown learned the value of versatility while growing up in Orange, TX. His dad was a locally popular musician who specialized in country, Cajun, and bluegrass — but not blues. Later, Gate was entranced by the big bands of Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, and Duke Ellington (a torrid arrangement of “Take the ‘A’ Train” remains a centerpiece of Brown’s repertoire). Tagged with the “Gatemouth” handle by a high school instructor who accused Brown of having a “voice like a gate,” Brown has used it to his advantage throughout his illustrious career.
Canned Heat:
Conceived as a blues revivalist group specializing in excavating pre-war gems, Canned Heat anchored their authentic inclinations with a heavy boogie that suited the hippie era. Their ear for blues classics and facility for droning blues jams made them ideal choices for the bills at both Monterey Pop and Woodstock. Their appearance at the latter festival arrived a year after the band had two surprise hit singles with “On the Road Again” and “Going Up the Country” — two country-blues numbers the Heat modernized thanks in part to Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson’s idiosyncratic phrasing. Wilson died just as the band settled into a groove, leaving fellow lead singer Bob “The Bear” Hite to shepherd Canned Heat through the end of the ‘70s. After Hite’s death in 1981, drummer Adolfo “Fito” de la Parra anchored Canned Heat through a revolving lineup that stretched all the way into the 2020s, when they released the farewell Finyl Vinyl.

![repost from facesofrock1 Pink Floyd (Hamilton, Ontario 1975) The night 50,000 Pink Floyd fans descended on Hamilton — inside the (literally) explosive 1975 show.The night is perhaps best remembered as a giant model airplane travelling by wire high above the crowd appeared to crash into Ivor Wynne’s scoreboard and explode. In actuality, members of Pink Floyd’s road crew had decided to rig all of the remaining surplus pyrotechnics from the tour to the scoreboard and set them to go off in conjunction with a simulated plane crash.
No one was injured, but the explosion was sufficient to destroy the scoreboard and blow out the stadium’s back wall. If Canadian Pink Floyd appreciators have never forgotten the incident, neither has Nick Mason. “I do know that we did a horrible amount of damage to the scoreboard, to our deep shame,” he says. “To the people of Hamilton, I’m very sorry about the scoreboard!”
This very special time capsule came by way of Jim “Speedy” Kelly. Shot on 8mm. Divided into two sets, the first hour featured songs soon to be iconic but entirely unknown to most or all of the crowd. The band’s openers “Raving and Drooling” and “You’ve Got to Be Crazy” would not be officially released until 1977’s “Animals” (respectively under the names “Sheep” and “Dogs.”) Introducing its since-legendary 26-minute suite “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” Waters offered an onstage tribute to Barrett, to whom the piece is dedicated.
