Sunday afternoon with friends (thank you linton_susan and Ken for the pics and company) And you think you have it all down… Our trip to LA was supposed to happen just as the fires started. We meant to take a breather and relax, write, exhaust Ludwig the dog with rambles in the canyons, cook, getting our screenplay done and out, and of course see our family and friends - Of course - it has already been turned upside down a few times. The most recent installation of this trip is to offer our friends support, as well as touristing for the economy, and volunteer wherever we could be of help. My favorite part of going out, whether it was a date, a dinner with friends or a party, has always been the anticipation - and getting ready. But when it is a public event, and I know photos of me will be taken (and possibly recycled forever over which I have no say) then getting ready is just plain stressful. Figuring out what to wear - again, understanding that whatever I chose will be stuck with me forever- doing my makeup and wondering if I’m blending enough, if I’m too shiny or if my concealer is too pale and making extra wrinkles, and hair… oh lord, the hair!! It never seems to come out the way I want. Sometimes I curl it and it does something ok, sometimes it comes out completely wrong- but most frequently, it does two different things on either side of my face. So, rushing off to the event - most of the time I’d feel all sweaty and lopsided and late! So how do all the celebrities always look so perfect when they attend screenings and dinners and events? Most of them have professional help. A make up artist, a hairstylist and a clothing stylist. romyglow needs about and hour and a half to make my face look this effortless. She begins her makeup sessions with gua sha and ice, a facial massage, and follows with Estée Lauder day cream and Futurist skin tint. And then… you can’t tell, but there are a million colors on my face. A makeup artist is an artist. They create art on your face. It’s a dab of this and a dab of that. Romy has the entire Estée Lauder catalogue at her disposal, and she literally dips her magic little brushes in every one. This incredible color lipstick is (some of) my favorite shade in 330 Impassioned but also two lip pencils, and two other lipsticks and nearly 15 minutes of just the lips!! (The other shade is Deny All and and 301 Smokescreen) And during all this, hoshounkpatin the hairstylist wets my hair, puts product in it, blowdries it, and then it’s close to an hour of curling just so… and then combing/brushing it into place , more product, and my hair looks healthy and shiny! I gained about 15 lb after my bilateral hip replacement in early 2024. The funny thing is, I was so happy with my life ; the end of chronic pain, building a life with my love, traveling with friends and working on new writing projects - that I had no idea I had gained all this weight until I went to Paris for my first modeling job of the year. Which was in September. One day back at my old job, and I was excruciatingly aware of every extra pound. I didn’t fit the clothes. Which of course WAS and IS my job. To fit the clothes! I squeezed into the largest of the items, leaving seams open, waistbands unbuttoned, and prayed that my ability to fake it was still in place. I managed to get through the assignments, but suddenly - I felt awful about myself. I had to lose some weight so I could fit into the clothing my job requires of me. And this is where I hit the post menopause bump. Didn’t matter how little I ate, the weight didn’t fluctuate. Alright- time to add weight lifting to the schedule. And the protein. And ditch the desserts. Two months later, I’m exactly the same weight. My butt feels firmer, but otherwise- most of my clothing is too small, a good indication I haven’t shrunk. And yet, I don’t exactly mind this new, fuller body. Compared to a year ago when I was 15 lbs less but in constant pain, my new softness feels soothing. And thanks to my love sjeffgreenstein my body also feels at the height of its sexiness, desirability and ok, I’ll say it - prowess. Happy New Year! There is such magic in the world; but sometimes in such tiny little moments that you can blink and miss them. This is why, I guess, everyone goes on and on about being present, living in the moment and all that. But simultaneously, those magic moments will be lost in time unless you quit examining the present and allow the past to fill you. I have spent six days in the most enchanting beautiful and exiting places with people I love most. Being entirely present. Pleasantly exhausted, I will now sit back and chew the cud. If you’ve had a shitty beginning to the New Year, maybe you can take solace in the Czech saying that “all that starts poorly ends well.” (It’s been mostly true for me😄, but maybe because I AM Czech.) And if you had the most extraordinary start to the year (like lucky lucky me), let’s step away from the present for a moment and let the gratitude of our new memories warm us for now.
