Did you know that your grip strength is directly linked to your longevity? Studies show that weaker grip strength is associated with a higher risk of heart disease, reduced mobility, and even shorter lifespan. But the good news? You can train it!

strong grip isn’t just about lifting heavier—it’s about staying active, independent, and thriving for years to come!

1. Farmer carry: try to carry at least 75% of your body weight for 60 seconds 
2. Dead hang: try to dead hang for 30 seconds and then work your way up to 60 seconds 
3. Lemon squeezes: lol these look so funny but they are tough! Try to do 100 unbroken

In January 2021 I was rushed into the hospital to have emergency surgery. My intestines twisted and it was the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced. I literally thought I was dying. When things like this happen, we have two choices to move forward or stay stagnant. Here are important lessons I learned from the experience.

1. Everything can change in a blink of an eye. You can literally be doing everything right but anything can happen good or bad. The most important thing you can do is treat every day as a gift. 

2. Shit happens, but it doesn’t determine your story. Like I said anything can happen good or bad. We don’t know what the future holds. But when bad things happen, we cannot let them write the rest of our story. When my intestines twisted everything was ripped from me. I didn’t know what the future held for me, my career, and I didn’t know if I’d ever be back to who I was before. But that year was one of the best years yet I got engaged to my best friend and when on so many adventures and had such amazing experiences with all of my loved ones. You get to write your story. 

3. Being fit and healthy is more important than you think. When I was rushed into the emergency surgery, every single doctor told me that recovery was gonna be hard. It was gonna take a long time and every single doctor was shocked as to how quickly I recovered and was back on my feet. They told me it was all because I took care of my body before all of this happened to me. My body remembered what it could do and muscle memory is a real thing. I cannot stress enough, how important it is to stay healthy, and stay fit. It’s not just about looking good. 

4. Mindset is everything. This is so key! The first day I was sitting in my hospital bed I was so upset. How did this happen to me? Why did this happen to me? I asked myself all of these questions. I felt negativity and complete disappointment. But I quickly realized that if I let my mind only think about the negatives, this would be so much harder. I pushed the negative thoughts down and changed my mindset. I can get through this. I can come back. I will stay positive.

3 years ago I went to my husbands jiujitsu competition and saw him get his purple belt on the podium. I’d never been around jiujitsu before that but watching him complete gave me this itch that I had to try jiujitsu. 

Yesterday I stepped on the podium after my competition (and hit my new record of a 27second armbar) and got my purple belt 💜. I love this sport and there is always something to learn. Thank you to my professor paris_superhero for always pushing me.

What’s your biggest pet peeve? 

I’ve been a personal trainer for over a decade and there are a number of “fitness” pet peeves I have. Here they are 
1. Squatting doing kettlebell swings 
2. Pushing your hips forward in a SLDL 
3. Wrists bent on shoulder presses 
4. Leading with your hands on lateral raises
